You CAN Be A Successful Man Without Being a D$@k
Rant #1: You CAN Be A Successful Man Without Being a D$@k
This rant is more focused towards the men out there in business…young and old. Also, just a warning that I may curse a bit in my rants so if you’re sensitive to potentially offensive language, you can stop reading now.
As the title alludes, I’m here to tell you that you can be a successful man, make money, build wealth, raise your children, be a good husband, enjoy a giving life and do it all without being a dick. I have always believed in what I believe in today as far as what’s truly valuable and how us men should treat others no matter who they are or what position they hold. What’s changed is my tolerance for the braggadocios jerkwads in business. I have always in my heart had trouble with that big-time loudmouth that had some money and taught younger people that they should aspire to materialistic things in order to be as cool and big time as they are. We’ve all met the guy that talks about themselves nonstop and feels they are the most important person that ever walked the face of the earth. The machismo deuche bag that talks down to their wives or about women as conquests, and belittles people to puff themselves up. The jackass that talks incessantly about their new boat or sports car or house to remind you of how awesome they are. The dickwad that talks for 30 minutes about themselves and the second you or anyone starts to relay a personal experience they lose all interest. The worst part and sadly I’ll admit I fell victim to this as a young man in my career, the worst part is that people enable and perpetuate the behavior by putting up with that obnoxious blabbering loudmouth because they want success and money and believe if they listen to someone financially successful maybe they can get there too. Sometimes that works, but most of the time it doesn’t. But I can promise you 100% of the time they will be learning from a complete asshole. And typically that assholedness rubs off on the person too. So how does a young man start out and become successful? By finding some mentors with integrity that exhibit the golden rule in business. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Social Media has produced a boat load of content both good and bad. It’s hard to sift through the horse crap and find the sage advice out there. Young men just starting out can get confused by images of easy money and fake success. I think there’s a cultural shift going on right now as far as what it means to be an alpha male, masculine and what is honest to goodness true success; personally, financially, spiritually, in a community, in a family…and in life.
College graduates are finding any way possible to NOT work for the generation that spawned the TV show Madmen. The old school boys club that drank scotch at noon right before meetings, chased women at the office and then went home to treat their wife and kids like shit. The women’s rights movement was created because of these assholes. Which was needed because good men couldn’t make the change themselves and it took strong women to get it done. Right on. The women’s rights movement helped soften and redefine masculinity in our society in some really good ways. Unfortunately, I believe it’s made men afraid to be masculine in a healthy and needed way in our society. We need a clearer definition of what it means to be masculine and a man, we need to bring back chivalry and nobility…but that’s an entirely different topic that I won’t get into here. Stay tuned for that rant. Let’s just say if you don’t believe that masculine and feminine and men and women are different designs created by God for good…you can stop now because this just won’t click with you yet.
Back to our young men just starting out. They are smart and know in their gut that the life of their parents and grandparents is not a life they want. Unlike the rebellious hippie generation who denounced money and material possessions, these guys want it all. They want to keep their souls intact and enjoy the things that money can buy. Unfortunately, the role models that they have for the most part (if their parents aren’t teaching them) are found in their iPhones on social media. They watch and listen to hours of YouTube idiots that label themselves as entrepreneurs but don’t know shit about business. Thankfully, I see more and more amazing, kind, giving and successful entrepreneurs that are attacking the airwaves and putting out content to teach people the value of hard work, dedication, focus, and helping young men by supplying the tools needed for a truly fulfilling and successful life. Go listen to guys like Ed Mylett a successful entrepreneur that made it through the business trenches and kept his faith and integrity by focusing on helping others succeed. Check out Gary Vee who is changing the washed out voices of online marketers to that of actual value. Both these guys through their hard work have come to the realization that there is so much fake and dangerous content out there, that they need to rewrite the script for our upcoming generations. Instead of sitting on their piles of cash they’re working hard and shouting out truth. Their voices are being heard and I commend them on their core messages. Work hard, strive, believe in yourself, don’t settle, learn self-confidence, be honest with others and more importantly be honest with yourself, money is great but don’t think it brings happiness, focus on good habits and push yourself every day. It’s all solid advice and no bullshit about an easy road to success. Also no mumbo jumbo of just think positive, believe in yourself and everything will be amazing.
I think there are a lot of good men out there like these guys that are changing the narrative. Listen to them. Learn from them. You can be an alpha and still preach and live by integrity, kindness, chivalry, listening more than speaking and being good to others above all. I see a potential generation aspiring to the false YouTube Instagram flash success and it scares the fuck out of me. It’s terrifying to think that young men are buying into these fake online YouTube scammers who are straight up dick faces. Selling phony training courses or programs to get rich quick…they’re worse than the Madmen of yesterday. At least those old school businessmen made a commitment to work hard. Let’s just hope that more and more successful men come out to represent the truth with valuable lessons for our young men and some good life advice to reach them before it’s too late.
